Before joining the current WWE, he and partner Marty Jannetty wrestled as The Midnight Rockers in the AWA. Michaels’ parents are Dick and Carol Hickenbottom, and he was born on July 22, 1965, as Michael Shawn Hickenbottom. When Michaels was eight years old, his family moved from the United Kingdom to Maryland, thanks to his father’s job as an Air Force pilot. They described him as a quiet, shy boy who participated in numerous sports, including football, and was well-liked by all. When Michaels was 12, he decided he wanted to be a professional wrestler, but his high school didn’t have a wrestling team; he recalls thinking that. After watching wrestlers like Ric Flair, his father was an amateur wrestler at the University of Iowa.
After failing his second semester at Southwest Texas State University, Michaels decided to leave.
Pro Wrestling Career
To get ready for his pro wrestling debut with the NWA’s Mid-South Wrestling territory in October 1984. Michael trained with Mexican wrestler Jose Lothario. He later became a member of The Midnight Rockers tag team with partner Marty Jannetty. And the two went on to win the 1986 AWA world championship together as The Midnight Rockers. Michaels and Jannetty renamed The Rockers in 1987 after a fight in a Buffalo, New York bar, joined the WWE. And was fired after just one day in 1987.
The pair signed on with Continental Championship Wrestling (CCW) in Birmingham, Alabama. Where Michaels claims they wrestled in front of 25 spectators each week for $300. On a trial basis, the WWE rehired The Rockers in 1988. In October 1990, the team won the WWE Tag Team Championship, which the company later revoked. Due to a broken top rope midway through the match, the WWE chose not to air the championship match between Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart.
During an episode of Brutus Beefcake’s talk show in 1992, Michaels smashed Jannetty’s head against a window to end their partnership. Michaels’ villainous persona was born as a result of their split.
Michaels, who played the vain and arrogant Heartbreak Kid, described his character as “sort of an Elvis meets Freddie Mercury.” Michaels won the Intercontinental Championship before he was suspended for using steroids. In 1994, at WrestleMania X, Michaels made an unsuccessful bid to reclaim the title when he engaged in a ladder match with Razor Ramon.
In 1993, Kevin Nash was hired as Shawn Michaels’ bodyguard following a chance encounter in a locker room. After a ten-year battle with drug and alcohol addiction, Michaels moved to San Antonio, married, got clean, and discovered religion. Over four years after his official retirement, Michaels claims he found relief from his back pain by praying for it. And he made a triumphant comeback at SummerSlam 2002 by facing off against Triple H.
He continued to wrestle for another eight years before facing The Undertaker one last time at WrestleMania XXVI in March of 2010.
Since he retired from professional wrestling, Shawn Michaels has played an important role in developing WWE’s NXT brand, Which he describes as a training ground for future superstars.
