Nasal Drip Covid – What Is it?
Nasal Drip Covid or Sinusitis is a medical condition which produces a yellow, greenish yellow discharge from the nasal canal. This is normally caused by sinus infection with the cilia fibroid, which triggers the condition. The cilia are hair like projections that line the respiratory tract. They help in the passage of mucus and other secretions from the lungs to the nose and throat. The sinus infection may be caused due to a bacterial infection, allergies, structural abnormalities, trauma to the nose, excessive mucus production due to certain illnesses etc.
This type of discharge differs from one person to another and also from one occasion to another, as it does vary from person to person. Generally the symptoms are of a chronic nature, as they may occur after exposure to cold weather. Sinusitis may also start without any symptoms, at times when one has a sore throat or cough or when one is sleeping. Cough is one of the easiest symptoms of sinusitis.
Sinus infection can cause a number of symptoms. These include acute or mild headache, feeling of fullness in the ears and sometimes the eyes. Some people get into a fever or dizziness. There can be pain and pressure around the sinuses and forehead. Sometimes, there may be loss of smell, especially of sweet smell.
Nasal Drip Covid – Symptoms
The commonest symptoms of Nasal Drip Covid include the dripping sensation of mucus from the nose and the sense of having a sore throat. Sometimes there may be swelling of the nasal walls and there may be excess mucus in the nose too. The discharge, when not treated may have bad odors, especially of fish or garlic. Sometimes the eyes may be red or the lining around the nose may look swollen. There may be pain in the ears when a person sneezes.
Sometimes, sinusitis can develop with other forms of illness such as flu or common colds. In such situations, sinusitis can be confused with colds. Most often, these other illnesses are viral in nature and simply point to the need for medical attention. Sinus infection is not an infectious disease and if it develops with flu or common colds, these will go away on their own.
One study indicates that almost three-quarters of children between the ages of six and eleven years have had at least one post-nasal drip symptoms. Almost two thirds of these children had nasal congestion and about a third of them had symptoms that could potentially be related to colds. A majority of these children did not have one specific type of cold sore, but a majority of them did have post-nasal drip symptoms that were similar to common colds.
However, children who have allergic rhinitis have much higher chances of developing acute cold sores. A significant number of the people with sinusitis also have post nasal drip symptoms. It is only when these people realize that they have nasal congestion and other symptoms that they realize that this is a possible sign of a more serious illness.
Serious Issues
Some of these infections can be very serious, while others are not. For example, those who have viral rhubarb allergy and experience post nasal drip may not have a significant illness. The same goes for people with chronic sinusitis due to allergic reactions.
One way to differentiate between allergies and infections is by checking the odor of your nose. If the post-nasal drip odor is fishy or has a strong musty odor, then it is probably an infection. There are some medical conditions that exhibit this symptom, too. They include upper respiratory tract infections, sinusitis, upper respiratory infections and ear infections. The discharge from the nose is also characteristic of sinusitis and ear infections.
Treatment
Nasal Drip Cancers are the most common form of nasal drip. This condition is also known as Peritonsillar Pleural Disease. It is a symptom of an underlying illness, most commonly lung cancer. Nasal Drip is the “flue” symptom which means it dries out the lining of the nasal passage, causing an abundance of mucus in and around the nasal cavity.
Post nasal drip pain is the sensation of pain that arises when the mucous membranes in the nose become swollen. They are often irritated when mucous secretions move back up into the throat and nasal passages. Treatment of PND involves relief of the pain.
Vitamin C supplements are a good option to reduce the pain of post nasal drip. Since PND is caused by bacteria and viruses that enter through the nose, taking vitamin C supplements can help prevent or reduce further outbreaks of PND. However, if there are no vitamin C supplements in your current medicine cabinet, take vitamin C capsules.
Over the counter or prescribed pain medicine can provide instant relief from the pain of a sore or swollen nasal drip. Be sure to follow all the dosage directions carefully. This type of medicine may also cause unwelcome side effects and other health risks. So talking to your doctor is the best way to get answers to all your questions. Also, ask your pharmacist for alternatives to over the counter or prescribed pain medicine when looking for treatment for your sinus headache.
If the above mentioned treatments do not alleviate your symptoms, you should immediately see a doctor. There could be an underlying medical problem causing the pain. For example, allergies, rhinitis or a physical deformity could cause continuous drainage. Your doctor will be able to properly diagnose what the problem is and then give you the best treatment possible.
